viscount は古フランス語 visconte、さらに中世ラテン語 vicecomes「伯爵の代理人」に由来します。vice-「代わりに」+ comes「仲間・随員」で、vice-president や count と並べると、もとは伯爵に代わって務める役職だったと分かります。
Viscount came through Old French from Medieval Latin vicecomes, meaning "deputy of a count." It is built from vice-, meaning "in place of," and comes, which gave English count in the title sense. So it originally named an official who acted for a count or earl. Later it became a fixed rank in the nobility.
