祈る
解説 Definition
祈るとは、神仏や高い力に対して願いや感謝を伝える行為です。宗教的な儀式や個人的な願いの時に行われます。
To pray means to speak to God or another higher power, usually to ask for help, give thanks, or express hope. It is commonly used in religious or spiritual situations. It can also describe quietly wishing for something very strongly.

pray は prayer（祈り）とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。動詞が pray、名詞が prayer。使い方は pray to God「神に祈る」、pray for peace/the victims「平和を・被害者のために祈る」の2型が基本で、to は相手、for は内容と押さえると整理しやすいです。hope や wish よりも、pray はもっと切実で、宗教的・精神的に高い存在へ向かう感じがあります。ニュースの “We pray for ...” の形でもよく出ます。prey（獲物）とつづりが似ているので混同に注意。

pray は古フランス語 preier を経て、ラテン語 precari「切に願う・懇願する」に由来します。語根 prec- は「願い・祈り」を表し、もとは“強く頼む”ことなので、神に願いを向ける意味から「祈る」になりました。関連語は prayer、precarious です。
"Pray" came into English through Old French preier, from Latin precari, meaning "to beg" or "ask earnestly." Its root prec- is linked with requests and prayers, so the idea began as strongly asking for something. Over time, this sense narrowed in English to asking God or speaking to God.
