role は古フランス語 rolle、さらに中世ラテン語 rotulus「巻いた紙片」にさかのぼる。rot- には「回す・巻く」の感覚があり、俳優のせりふが巻物に記されていたことから「受け持ちの役」へ意味が育った。roll や rotate も近い仲間。
