work の語源・成り立ち Etymology
workは古英語weorc、さらにゲルマン祖語*werkanにさかのぼる語で、核は「何かを成し遂げること」です。細かな接辞には分けにくい基本語ですが、ただの労働でなく「結果を生む働き」まで含むので、作品をa workと呼ぶ理由も見えてきます。wroughtやergonomicも遠い親類です。
"Work" comes from Old English "weorc," from Proto-Germanic "*werkan," with the basic idea of doing or making something. It was never limited to physical labor alone, but also referred to the result of effort. That is why English can use "work" both for labor and for a created thing, as in "a work of art."
