救貧院とは、貧困者を収容し、働く能力のある者に労働を強制する施設のこと。19世紀のイギリスで孤児や貧困層の救済手段として用いられ、入所者は厳しい規則と規律のもとで共同生活を送った。教区や自治体が運営し、生活費と引き換えに肉体労働に従事させていた。
