safety は古フランス語経由でラテン語 salvus「無傷の、安全な」にさかのぼり、safe + -ty（性質）と見られます。salvation や salvage も同系で、核にあるのは「傷つかず丸ごと保たれること」だと分かります。
Safety comes from safe, with the noun ending -ty, and ultimately goes back through Old French to Latin salvus, meaning "unharmed" or "whole." Its earlier sense was the condition of being kept intact and uninjured. Related words like salvation and salvage come from the same family.
