analysis はギリシャ語 analysis に由来し、ana-「ばらして」＋ lysis「ほどく」から成ります。dialysis や paralysis も同じ lysis を含む語です。つまり分析とは、ひと固まりのまま見るのでなく、いったん解いて部分ごとに見ることだとわかります。
Analysis comes from Greek analysis, from ana- meaning "up" or "apart" and lysis meaning "loosening" or "breaking up." The basic idea was to loosen something into parts. That is why the word came to mean studying something by separating it into smaller pieces, and the same lysis root appears in words like dialysis and paralysis.
