analysis はギリシャ語 analysis に由来し、ana-「ばらして」＋ lysis「ほどく」から成ります。dialysis や paralysis も同じ lysis を含む語です。つまり分析とは、ひと固まりのまま見るのでなく、いったん解いて部分ごとに見ることだとわかります。
Analysis comes from Greek analysis, from ana- meaning "up" or "apart" and lysis meaning "loosening" or "breaking up." The basic idea was to loosen something into parts.
