synthesis はギリシャ語 synthesis に由来し、syn-「共に」+ thesis「置く」から成ります。別々の要素を「一緒に置く」がそのまま「統合・合成する」なので意味が見えやすく、thesis や antithesis も同じ tithenai「置く」を含みます。
