synopsis はギリシャ語 synopsis に由来し、syn-「共に」+ opsis「見ること」から成ります。ばらばらの情報を一緒に見渡すことが原義で、そこから「全体を見通せる要約・概要」になりました。synoptic, optic も同じ語根を含みます。
