tremendous（ものすごい）に副詞化の -ly が付いた語。tremendous はラテン語 tremendus「震え上がるほど恐ろしい」からで、語根は tremere「震える」。つまり元は「怖くて震えるほど」が、今では「非常に」の強意になった。関連語: tremble, tremor。
