otherwise は古英語 on othre wisan「別の仕方で」が縮まった語で、other + wise（方法）に分けられます。wise はここで「賢い」ではなく「やり方」で、likewise と同じ要素だと思うと、「そうでなければ」が直訳の「別のやり方では」だと見えてきます。
Otherwise comes from Old English on othre wisan, meaning "in another way." It is made of other + wise, where wise once meant "manner" or "way," not "intelligent," as in likewise. Over time, the phrase became one word and developed the sense "if not" as well as "differently."
