解説 Definition
基準になっている人・物とは別に存在するものを指し、「ほかの」「別の」という意味を表す語。名詞の前で限定することが多いが、the other のように代名詞的にも使える。one ... the other や other people など頻出表現が多く、文法面でも重要な基本語である。
Other refers to a different person, thing, or group from the one already mentioned or known. It is used before a noun to add another choice or to show contrast. It often helps compare one thing with a different one.

other は「基準の外にあるもう一方・別のもの」とつかむと覚えやすい。まず one ... the other で「二つのうち片方／もう片方」をセットで固定。さらに another は an + other で「もう一つの別の」、others は「ほかの人たち・物たち」。other people, the other side など、何かと比べて“こちらではない側”を指す場面でよく出る。else は後ろから添える感じで、something else とは位置が違う点にも注意。
Think of `other` as the one on the other side, not this one. The pattern `one ... the other` is the best anchor, because it clearly shows two sides. Then connect `another` as `an + other`, and `others` as the plural form.

Other comes from Old English othor, from an Indo-European root meaning "the second of two" or "the one that is different." It preserves an old system of contrast between one thing and another. Related forms such as the other and another grew from this same idea.
