school はギリシャ語 skhole「余暇、自由な時間」がラテン語 schola を経て入った語です。接頭辞より語幹 schol- が核で、scholar や scholastic も同じ仲間です。「学校」がもともと「働かず学び考えるための余白」だったと知ると、意味の成り立ちが腑に落ちます。
