Otherness is the quality of being seen as different from what is normal, familiar, or accepted in a group. It is often used in literature, culture, philosophy, and social discussion. The word usually focuses on difference in identity, experience, or social position.

まず other（ほかの、別の）を確実に土台にすると覚えやすいです。otherness はそこに -ness が付いて「他であること」「自分と同じではない性質」という名詞になった形。difference が単なる「違い」を広く述べるのに対し、otherness は「相手が自分とは別の存在として立っている感じ」に寄りやすい語です。哲学・社会学では self と対比して現れやすく、「異質さ」だけでなく「他者として向き合う感覚」まで含む、と意識すると定着します。

otherness は other に名詞化の接尾辞 -ness が付いた語で、直訳すると「他であること」です。other は古英語 oþer に由来し、もともと「二つのうちもう一方」という感覚を持っていたため、そこから哲学的な「他者性」へ意味が深まっていきました。関連語は other, another。
Otherness is formed from other and the noun suffix -ness. Other goes back to Old English other, which originally had the sense of "the second of two" or "the remaining one." From that basic idea of being separate or different, the word developed into the more abstract sense of being "other." Related words include other and another.
