「soup」は古フランス語 soupe、さらに俗ラテン語 suppa「汁に浸したパン」に由来する。sop や supper が近い親類で、核にあるのは sup- 系の「浸す・すする」感覚だ。もともと主役は液体そのものでなく、汁を吸ったパンだったと知ると意味の広がりが見える。
Soup came from Old French soupe, from Vulgar Latin suppa, which originally meant bread soaked in broth. It is related to English sop, a piece of bread dipped in liquid, and probably also supper. Over time, the focus shifted from the soaked bread to the liquid dish itself, giving the modern form of the word.
