sop something in ...
A small gift, concession, or action given to calm dissatisfied or angry people. It usually eases complaints temporarily without solving the real problem.
a sop to angry voters「怒る有権者への懐柔策」、offer tickets as a sop to fans「ファンをなだめるため券を出す」の型で押さえましょう。
Picture giving an angry person just a small piece of something to quiet them for a while. A sop is a temporary concession, not a genuine solution. Remember the pattern “a sop to angry voters.”
The small tax cut was a sop to angry voters.
They offered free tickets as a sop to disappointed fans.
The apology seemed like a sop rather than a real solution.
sop something in ...
The word comes from Old English sopp, meaning a piece of bread soaked in liquid, and goes back to a Germanic root connected with taking in liquid. The word later developed the figurative sense of something offered to calm or satisfy someone.
