物を大きく開いたり、ある範囲にのばしたりするとき、また何かが周囲へ広がっていくときに使う基本動詞です。布や地図のような具体物にも、火・病気・うわさ・影響のような抽象的なものにも広く使われます。
To open something out or extend it over a larger area, or to become more widely present. This verb can describe physical things such as a cloth, as well as fire, disease, or news reaching more places or people.

spread は「面のように広げる・広がる」と覚えると、物理的な動きにも抽象的な広がりにも使えます。机に地図を広げるイメージから、fire spread, news spread, disease spread のように火・知らせ・病気が周囲へ広がる感覚へつなげます。distribution が「配布・流通」のしくみ寄りなのに対し、spread は実際に広がっていく様子そのもの。wide を添えた widespread も一緒に覚えると定着します。
