unless は一見 un-「否定」+ less「より少なく」に見えるが、実際は中英語 on lesse 「〜でない場合に」が縮まった語。less は古英語 læs にさかのぼり、least や lessen と同根なので、『条件が欠ければ』から『そうでない限り』になったと分かる。
Unless does not come from un- plus less in the usual modern way. It developed from Middle English on lesse, meaning roughly "in a less case" or "if not," and later became a single word. Its history shows a shift from an older conditional phrase to the modern meaning "except if."
