解説 Definition
日付や曜日、月の並びを一覧できる表や道具を指す語。予定や記念日、祝日などを確認したり書き込んだりする日常的な「カレンダー」の意味で使われることが多く、文脈によっては「暦」も表す。
A calendar is a chart, book, or digital tool that shows the days, weeks, and months of a year. People use it to check dates and plan events or appointments.

calendar は日本語の「カレンダー」と形も意味も近いので、まず date, month, year が順に並ぶ表を思い浮かべると定着しやすいです。予定を書き込む wall calendar / desk calendar、祝日を確認する check the calendar、学校や会社の academic calendar など、日付を確認・管理する場面と結びつけるのがコツ。似た語 schedule は個人の予定表、calendar は日付の配列や暦全体も指せる点を分けて覚えると混同しません。つづりは calender ではなく calendar。

calendar の語源・成り立ち Etymology
calendar は古フランス語 calendier を経て、ラテン語 calendarium「帳簿」にさかのぼります。calendarium は calendae「毎月初日」＋ -arium から成り、intercalate も同根なので、暦が「告げられた日を記す帳面」だったとわかります。
Calendar came into English through French from Latin calendarium. That Latin word meant an account book and came from calendae, the first day of the month, when debts were announced or recorded. So the meaning grew from "a record of named days" into the modern system of dates and months.
