almanac の語源・成り立ち Etymology
almanac は古フランス語 almanach、中世ラテン語 almanachus を経た語で、語頭 al- はアラビア語の定冠詞に由来すると考えられます。algebra や alcohol にも同じ al- が見え、天文暦や季節の記録をまとめる語になったことで「年鑑」の雰囲気が生まれました。
Almanac came into English through Old French almanach and Medieval Latin almanachus. Its deeper origin is uncertain, but many scholars think the al- part reflects the Arabic article found in words like algebra and alcohol. The word was used for books that gathered calendar, astronomical, and seasonal information, and from there it came to mean a yearly reference book.
