ephemeris は後期ラテン語 ephemeris、さらにギリシャ語 ephēmeris「日ごとの記録」に由来します。epi-「〜に沿って」+ hēmera「日」から成り、毎日の天体位置を書いた表なので「天体暦」の意味になりました。関連語は ephemeral。
Ephemeris came into Latin from Greek ephēmeris, meaning a daily record or journal. It is built from epi- and hēmera, meaning "day." Because it was used for tables that recorded positions day by day, the word later became linked especially with astronomy; ephemeral comes from the same Greek day-root.
