atlas はギリシャ神話の巨人 Atlas に由来し、天を支える姿から「世界を支える図」のような連想で地図帳の名になりました。16世紀以降、地図を集めた本の題名として広まり、固有名が一般名詞化した語です。関連語は Atlantic, atlas（第一頸椎）。
"Atlas" comes from the name of Atlas, the giant in Greek mythology who was pictured as holding up the sky. In the 16th century, his name was used for books of maps, suggesting the image of carrying or supporting the world. The proper name later became a common noun for a collection of maps.
