語尾の -er / -eer を「何かに関わる人・物」の目印として見ると残りやすいです。gazetteer は gazette を土台にした“情報を載せる本”で、そこに地名だけを集中的に並べたもの、と捉えると覚えやすい。dictionary が単語を引く本、atlas が地図を見る本なら、gazetteer は地名を引いて位置・説明を確かめる本。見出し語が place names に特化した、地図帳より索引的な辞典だと結び付けると忘れにくいです。
