reference の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 referre（re-「再び」+ ferre「運ぶ」）が語源で、「情報を元に戻して確認する」が原義。同根語に transfer（移す）、prefer（好む）がある。何かを「持ち帰って見直す」行為から「参照」の意味が生まれた。
Reference comes from the Latin verb referre, made from re- meaning "back" and ferre meaning "carry." Its original idea was "carry back" or "bring back for checking." From that sense, it developed into the meaning of looking back to another source for information.
