referee の語源・成り立ち Etymology
referee は refer に由来し、re-「後ろへ」＋ ferre「運ぶ」から成るラテン語 referre が源です。refer や reference も仲間で、「争点をその人のもとへ持っていく相手」と考えると、審判が referee と呼ばれる理由が見えてきます。
Referee comes from refer, which goes back to Latin referre, built from re- "back" and ferre "to carry." The idea was to carry a question or dispute back to someone for judgment. From that, a referee became the person a case is referred to. Reference and refer share the same root.
