古フランス語 plaisir、ラテン語 placere「気に入る」に由来する。相手の気にかなうよう願う感覚から、依頼を丁寧にする表現へ広がった。
Please comes through Old French plaisir from Latin placere, meaning “to be pleasing” or “to be liked.” The idea developed from pleasing someone to making a request in a way that respects the other person's wishes.
