appall は古フランス語 apalir「青ざめさせる」を経て入り、さらに俗ラテン語系で pallere「青白い」が背景にある。a- は強意的に働き、語の核は pall-「青白くなる」で、恐怖で顔色が変わることから「ぞっとさせる」になった。関連語に pale、pallid があり、意味の流れが見えやすい。
Appall came into English through Old French apalir, which meant "to make pale." Behind it is Latin pallere, "to grow pale," the source of English pale and pallid. The sense moved from the physical reaction of fear, losing color in the face, to the stronger idea of shocking or horrifying someone deeply. The history of the word still keeps that image of sudden fear.
