unforgivableは古英語forgiefan（許す）に由来し、forgiveは「責めや怒りを手放して与える」という感覚から育った語です。un-「否定」+ -able「〜できる」で、「許すことができない」から「許せない」になります。関連語はforgive、giftです。
Unforgivable is formed from un-, forgive, and -able. Forgive comes from Old English forgiefan, and the older sense was close to "give up" anger, blame, or a claim against someone. Over time, the word developed the sense of not being able to release that blame. Forgive is related to give and gift.
