Rigidity is the quality of being stiff, fixed, or not flexible, either physically or in ideas and rules. It can describe hard materials, strict systems, or people who do not easily change their opinions or methods.

rigid を知っていれば覚えやすい語。rigid は「硬い・融通がきかない」で、-ity が付くと「その性質」になり rigidity は「硬さ、硬直性」。物理的に硬いだけでなく、rules, attitudes, thinking などが変わりにくい場面でもよく使う。flexibility の反対側に置くと記憶しやすく、mental rigidity なら「考えが固い」、rigidity in the system なら「制度の硬直性」。rigorous と形が少し似るが、そちらは「厳密な・厳しい」で別語なので混同に注意。
Build it from `rigid`, then add `-ity` for the quality or state. So `rigidity` is the quality of being rigid. It works for both physical stiffness and inflexible thinking, which makes `flexibility` a useful opposite to remember with it.

rigidity はラテン語 rigere「こわばる・硬くなる」から出た rigid に -ity が付いた語で、核は「ぴんと張って曲がらない」こと。rigor や rigorous も同根なので、物の硬さだけでなく、態度や規則の融通のなさまで表すのが理解しやすい。
Rigidity comes from rigid, which comes from Latin rigere, meaning "to be stiff" or "become hard." At first it referred to physical stiffness, something stretched tight and not bending. Later the sense widened to strict or inflexible behavior, rules, or attitudes. Rigor and rigorous come from the same root.
