解説 Definition
適応とは、生物や組織が新しい環境や条件に対応する過程です。進化生物学では、生物が自然選択を通じて環境に適応した形質を発達させることを指します。また、一般的には何かを別の用途に調整することも意味します。
Adaption means the process of changing to fit new conditions or a new environment. It can also mean a changed version of something, such as a story made into a film or play, though adaptation is more common for this meaning. Adaption is used less often than adaptation in standard English.

adapt（適応する・合わせる）が土台。まず「環境や目的に合わせて変える」動詞 adapt を思い出し、-tion が付いて「その過程・結果」＝適応と捉えると覚えやすい。adjustment より“新しい条件になじむ”感じが強く、biology では adaption to a new environment の形で出やすい。さらに adoption（採用・養子縁組）と見間違えやすいので、adapt 系だと意識すること。なお一般的な綴りは adaptation で、adaption はその異形。
