leewayは航海語で、lee「風下側」+ way「進路・余地」の複合語。leeward や headway と同じ要素をもち、船が風で横に流されても許される「ずれの幅」を指したことから、転じて時間や判断の余裕を表すようになった。
Originally a sailing term made from lee, meaning "the side away from the wind," and way, meaning "course" or "space to move." It referred to the sideways drift a ship could have and still stay safe. From that physical idea of allowed movement, it later came to mean extra room, freedom, or time.
