小さな枝；大きな枝から分かれた細い部分。樹木や低木の小さい分岐。

twig は古英語 twig「小枝」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *twigga「二股・分かれ目」、印欧祖語 *dwo-「二つ」へ遡ります。枝先が二手に分かれる形が原像なので、「二つに分かれるもの」から「小枝」になった語です。関連語は twin, two。
