お尻とは人や動物の臀部のことで、座るときに体重がのる部分です。日常では座ったり歩いたりする動作に関わる部位として話題になります。料理では臀部の肉を「ランプ」と呼び、ステーキやローストなどに使われます。

rumpは中英語に入り、デンマーク語 rumpe・スウェーデン語 rumpa など北欧語系、さらに中期オランダ語 romp と同系です。原義は「尾の付け根の後ろ半分」なので、お尻や転じて「残り物」を表すのも自然です。同系語はドイツ語 Rumpf, Dutch romp。
"Rump" entered English in the Middle Ages from northern European languages such as Danish and Swedish, and it is related to Middle Dutch and Germanic forms like Dutch romp and German Rumpf. It originally referred to the hind part of an animal, near the base of the tail. From that physical sense, it also came to mean the remaining part of something after the rest is gone.
