un- は古英語の否定「〜でない」、discover は古フランス語 descovrir、さらにラテン語 discooperire「覆いを取る」が元。cover や recover と同じ語根をもち、undiscovered は「まだ覆いが取られていない」から「未発見」となる。
Undiscovered combines un- with discovered. Discover came through Old French from Latin discooperire, meaning "to uncover" or "remove a covering." The original idea was that something hidden has its cover taken away. So undiscovered keeps the older image of something still not uncovered. Cover and recover are related words.
