ラテン語 discooperire が語源。dis-（除去）+ cooperire（覆う）で「覆いを取り除く」が原義。古フランス語 descovrir を経て英語に入った。関連語: cover（覆う）、recover（回復する＝再び覆う）。発見とは隠されたものの覆いを外すことという洞察が得られる。
Discovered comes from discover, which entered English through Old French descovrir and goes back to Latin discooperire, "to uncover." It is built from dis- "away" and cooperire "to cover." The basic idea was removing a covering from something hidden, and from that it developed into finding or bringing something to light; it is related to cover and recover.
