suggest の語源・成り立ち Etymology
suggest はラテン語 suggerere に由来し、sub-「下で」が同化して sug- となり、gerere「運ぶ」と結びついた語です。原義は『下からそっと持ち出す』で、そこから相手の心に案を差し出す、つまり『提案する』になりました。関連語は gesture, digest です。
Suggest comes from Latin suggerere, made from sub- "from below" and gerere "to carry"; sub- changed in sound to sug- before g. Its early sense was "bring up quietly" or "put forward from below," which later became the idea of putting an idea into someone’s mind.
