To discover means to find something for the first time or to learn something that was not known before. It can be used for physical things, new facts, places, ideas, or abilities.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
find が単に「見つける」なのに対し、discover は「探したり調べたりした結果、知られていなかったものが明らかになる」語。偶然なくした鍵を find するより、研究して原因を discover するイメージで覚えると定着しやすい。discover a new planet, discover the truth, discover a mistake, discover that S V などの形が頻出。invent は新しく作る、discover は元からあったものを見つける、この対比で混同を防げます。
Use a contrast: `find` is often just finding something, but `discover` is uncovering something not known before. That is why `discover the truth` or `discover a new planet` feels natural. Also compare it with `invent`: you invent something new, but you discover something that already existed.
