end は古英語 ende、さらにゲルマン祖語にさかのぼる古い語で、語幹そのものが「境界・端」を表します。だから動詞 end は「終える」というより「端まで持っていく」感覚で、終点を意識させます。ending や endless も同根です。
End comes from Old English ende and has earlier Germanic roots. Its stem expresses the idea of a boundary or an outer limit.
