解説 Definition
movie は「映画」という意味です。アメリカ英語でよく使われ、film より日常的な響きがあります。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
movie は moving picture(動く写真)から生まれた日常語と覚えます。特にアメリカ英語で一般的で、watch a movie、go to the movies の形が定番です。film も「映画」ですが、movie のほうが会話的で、film は作品・芸術や撮影素材を意識させることがあります。
Connect movie with moving picture, the longer expression from which it developed. The central image is therefore a picture that moves on a screen. Learn it through common combinations such as watch a movie, choose a movie, and go to the movies. In everyday American English, movie is usually the natural conversational choice. Film can mean the same thing, but it may sound more connected with cinema as an art form and can also name the material or process used for recording images.
例文

movie の語源・成り立ち Etymology
moving picture(動く写真)の短縮形 movie で、20世紀初頭のアメリカ英語で定着。move はラテン語 movēre(動かす)に由来し、接尾辞 -ie は親しみを込めた縮小形。関連語: movement(動き)、motion(運動)。「絵が動く」驚きがそのまま名前になった。
Movie arose in American English around the beginning of the twentieth century as an informal shortening of moving picture. The ending -ie gave the shortened form a familiar character. Moving comes from move, which entered English through French from Latin movere, meaning “to move.” The name thus reflects the striking feature that distinguished the new medium from ordinary photographs: its pictures appeared to move.
