reflux はラテン語 re-「後ろへ」+ fluere「流れる」に由来し、原義は「逆向きに流れること」。fluid や influx も同じ語根を持ち、本来は前へ進む流れが押し返されるイメージだと、胃酸の逆流にも使う理由がよく見える。
Reflux comes from Latin refluxus, from re- "back" and fluere "to flow." Its basic sense was a backward flow, the opposite of a normal forward movement. That physical image later became the usual meaning in medical and scientific use. Fluid and influx come from the same Latin root.
