胃の内容物や胃酸、飲み込んだ食べ物が食道や口のほうへ戻ってくることを指す医学的な名詞。嘔吐のように強く吐く場合だけでなく、自然にこみ上げてくる逆流や未消化物の吐き戻しにも使われる。

regurgitationはラテン語 re-「逆に」+ gurgitare「どっと流れ出る」に由来し、もとは液体が押し戻される生々しい動きの語。gorgeやdisgorgeも同根で、飲み込んだものが流れを逆走するから「逆流・吐き戻し」になる。
Regurgitation comes from Latin regurgitare, from re- "back" and gurgitare, "to gush" or "to flood." The original image is of liquid being pushed back against its usual flow.
