給付金とは、仕事やサービスの対価として定期的に支払われる一定額の金銭を指します。学費や生活費の補助として学生などに支給されることもあり、給与よりも少額である場合が多いです。

stipend はラテン語 stipendium に由来し、stips（少額の金銭・寄付）と pendere（量って支払う）に分けられます。つまり『きちんと量って渡す定額の金』が原像で、pension や expend にも同じ pend- 系の“支払い”の感覚が流れています。
Stipend comes from Latin stipendium, probably built from stips, meaning a small payment or contribution, and pendere, meaning "to weigh out" or "pay."
