nippy は nip「きゅっとつねる・かむ」に形容詞語尾 -y が付いた語で、nip は低地ドイツ語系のゲルマン語に通じます。肌寒さを「刺す」ように感じるので、「ひんやり」も「きびきび」も同じ核から出ました。nip や nipping も同根で、意味の芯は「鋭くきゅっと当たる」です。
