古英語 scol（学校）にギリシャ語由来の scholē（暇・学問）が合流し、scholar（学者）+ 接尾辞 -ship（状態・資格）で構成される。原義は「学者としての身分・資格」で、そこから学問を支援する資金の意味に発展した。関連語に scholar（学者）や school（学校）がある。
