training は train + -ing で、train は古フランス語 trainer、さらにラテン語 trahere「引っぱる」にさかのぼります。attract や tractor も同じ語根で、「人を一定方向へ引いて鍛える」感覚から、訓練という意味になったと見ると腑に落ちます。
Training comes from train + -ing. Train entered English through Old French trainer and goes back to Latin trahere, meaning "to pull" or "draw."
