retraining は re-「再び」+ training から成り、train は古フランス語 trainer を経て、ラテン語 trahere「引っぱる」にさかのぼります。人を一定方向へ「導いて伸ばす」感覚から訓練の意味になり、retraining はその訓練をもう一度行う語で、関連語に attract, contract があります。
Retraining is made from re- "again" and training. Train came through Old French trainer and goes back to Latin trahere, "to pull" or "draw," a root also seen in attract and contract. The meaning shifted from pulling or guiding in a direction to teaching and discipline, so retraining means training someone again.
