train は古フランス語 trainer「引っぱる」に由来し、語根はラテン系の trahere「引く」と結びつきます。trail や tractor も同根で、「後ろに引いて連なるもの」という発想から、車両がつながる train が「列車」を意味するようになりました。
Train comes from Old French trainer, meaning "to pull" or "drag," from a Latin root also seen in trahere, "to draw." The earliest idea was something pulled along behind. From that image of linked things being drawn in a line, the word came to be used for a line of railway cars. Related words include trail and tractor.
