「except」はラテン語excipere「取り出す・除外する」に由来する。ex-「外へ」＋capere「つかむ・取る」で、「全体から外へ取り分ける」が「〜を除いて」になった。acceptやcaptureも同じcap-系で、「つかみ取る」感覚が土台にある。
