sprig は古英語 springan「跳ねる・芽を出す」につながるゲルマン系語群の一員で、小さく突き出た枝を表すようになった。spring や springy と近く、“ひょいっと飛び出したもの”と考えると、「小枝」が若く細い枝を指す理由まで見えてくる。
