plea の語源・成り立ち Etymology
plea はアングロ=フランス語 plai を経て、ラテン語 placitum「意見・決定」にさかのぼり、元は法廷での申し立てを指しました。please や placid と同じ plac- は「気に入る・穏やかにする」に通じ、相手を動かすための言葉だから「嘆願」の意味へ伸びたと理解できます。
Plea came through Anglo-French from a Latin root seen in placitum, meaning a decision or opinion, especially in legal use. At first it referred to a statement made in court. From that legal sense, it widened into the idea of an earnest request or appeal.
